A Vintage Green Dresser and a Napkin

This week I was checking out the local Goodwill and found this great vintage dresser.
Before:

The dresser has great details, but the bottom drawer had the vaneer coming completely off and the dresser was stained red.  After fixing the bottom drawer with wood glue and clamps I mixed up my own vintage green color and painted the dresser with 2 coats of home-made chalk paint.   When it was done; I was looking at the center cutout  and felt that it needed a little something.

I had experimented with using napkins on old wood to get a wallpaper look and I thought this would work on the dresser too.  I found a napkin and took off the second layer so that I had only one ply.

I brushed Modge Podge on the dresser and placed the napkin down and tried to rub out the wrinkles.

I then cut around the edges of the napkin with a scalpel in the groove of the dresser to cut away the extra napkin.

I brushed on another coat of Modge Podge and let it dry.

I distressed the dresser and sealed and aged it with Linseed oil/dark wax, including the napkin part.

I love the details

  1. DD, this is one of your best creations, yet! That shade of green is gorgeous...and I like the napkin medallion. You should sell the painting with the dresser, perfect match!

  4. The decoupage was a great idea! The one little piece of wood decor on the left of the decoupaged piece looks crocked in the photo.

  15. LOVE this dresser! The napkin idea was perfect. I have seen where people have put napkins on glass, but not wood.

  18. Oh dear, that little highboy would be perfect in our room. The color is just what I'd need. You did such a great job renewing her. The decoupage napkin looks like it was always there. Sure wish I could find a highboy like that around where we live but if I did it would be too expensive for me. Everything here (western CO, Grand Junction area) is so expensive. Maybe I should say it's expensive for people trying to live on their SS for only income. Property here is priced like there's gold running thru it. I get so disgusted sometimes with how things are priced here. But sorry I digress.
Wish I could buy your little chest from you, love it so much, the details on it are wonderful. I love old fashioned things, the styles appeal to me so much more than anything new.
Have great rest of week. Happy daze

  19. Darrielle, you mention that you used handmade chalk paint on this... do you have a DIY on your blog somewhere for this ? if so, could you please send me the link? I'd love to know how you made it! It's a great color and I love the napkin detail! What a wonderful score at the thrift shop! Thank you!

    1. Thank you Patty-I do make my own chalk paint at times and do not have a recipe for it, I suppose I should! I use Plaster of Paris and flat paint. There are many recipes and they are all about the same, if you do a search. I don't measure so I haven't posted a recipe!

    2. Ah-ha! As long as I know plaster of paris is the secret ingredient, I'll google to see what I can find. Thank you !
