French Bistro Chairs and Salt Wash

It is time for another furniture makeover!

Saltwash™ is a powder that can be added to any kind of brand or type of paint. It is made with real sea salt which helps your paint to dry more quickly. On a piece of furniture you can achieve a finish that is weathered and worn as if it has been in the bright sun and salt air for a very long time.

I had the perfect project in mind for Salt Wash! 

Awhile ago a friend of mine asked if I wanted some rusty old French Bistro chairs that she had.  She had them in her yard and the wood was broken and rotted and she did not feel like fixing them.  I of course said "yes" and fell in love with the crusty rusty look.

After removing the old wood I had great rusty crusty metal frames.  

I went to my local lumber store and bought floor baseboards and cut them to the right size for the chairs.  The reason I used baseboards was because one edge is already sanded to a curved shape and does not have a sharp edge. 

I followed the directions included in the package; add powder to any type of paint (I added it to white chalk paint). Mix to the consistency of cake icing, then apply the thickened paint to the furniture.  

Once it dries to a tacky, nearly dry texture, gently smooth the peaks with a brush. When the first color is dry, apply the second color.

The next step was to scrape the boards with a scraper and let the chippy, crusty goodness appear!  

My last steps were to seal and add a bit more patina with dark wax/linseed oil and then attached the boards to the rusty chair frames with bolts and nuts. 

I love the layers of crustiness!
