At the Flea Market this past weekend I walked past this piece the first time because this is what it looked like-
Before:
It had no legs and just looked like a streaky orange box. I looked at this venders booth a second time (because I bought a dresser the first time and was picking it up) and noticed the detail at the bottom of the drawer. I then opened it up and looked at it and realized someone had cut the legs off and this had potential to be a fabulous piece. I loaded it up in my Volvo and went home.
I looked through my stash of legs in my workshop and found a few different kinds, but only one would work with the existing piece as it was and I was not up for a total change. My husband decided to help me ( he is good about moving furniture and going on the hunt with me, but he usually has no interest in the painting/fixing stage). He drilled holes in the chest and screwed in the legs. Not the perfect legs, but good enough.
I mixed up some Eulie's Sky Milk paint by Miss Mustard Seed and added a little French Enamel to just be different. After painting 3 coats ( it took that many to cover the ugly rusty-orange color) I hand painted the details in white. After scraping off the chips I sealed it with dark wax and hemp oil. I decided to make the drawers inside different so I painted them white and the bottoms aqua. I then stenciled on a design to each drawer.

I am happy with how it looks now that it is painted and has legs!

What a find! I love the color and especially how you did the drawers! I think the legs look perfect. I prefer the inside more than the outside, and if it were mine, and I had the room, I'd leave the doors open. xoxo I bet you sell this one fast. I have noticed on some old pieces that the two front legs match, but the back don't; so, if a piece is missing a couple of legs, one might be able to mend it.
ReplyDeleteThank you--I almost didn't see it, but I am glad I did. I like how it turned out in the end too
DeleteWow - So pretty! I think the legs are perfect.
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday :-)
~Sherri
Thank you Sherri--the legs worked out very well! I love that my hubby helped me too!
DeleteDarrielle, this is painted so beautifully. Just a gorgeous piece!
ReplyDeleteThank you Victoria--I love the color!
DeleteThanks to your vision, this piece turned out beautifully! You've mentioned finding hemp oil locally. Does it need to be a specific type of hemp oil?
ReplyDeleteThank you--I actually just found hemp oil at Costco and use it. I also order from MMS at times.
DeleteWow, if the dealer who sold it to you could see it now! I love the color and those legs look like they were there all along.
ReplyDeleteThank you Betsy--I like how the legs look too!
DeleteYou are "the miracle worker"!!!! I don't even like chippy furniture, but this looks great! Linda@Wetcreek Blog
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda--I would notice it now but did pass it by at first so I suppose it is sort of a miracle!
DeleteWOW what a difference!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Martina--it is so much better now!
ReplyDeleteWonderful job! You'd never know those legs weren't there all the time. Love it!
ReplyDeleteJudi in the UK
Thank you Judi-the legs worked out well I think
DeleteWowza! What a transformation! Can you believe someone hacked the poor legs off at one time? Way to see the potential and give it a new life. Beautiful and love the color choice!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suzanne--I think people do word things to furniture, but I suppose some people think what I do to furniture is weird too!
DeleteOh my!! What a bold brave girl you are with design and colour it looks amazing and as for those French empire type legs they in my book are just right. You also added the wood scalloped trim across the bottom as well adding such a sweet touch. What about chipping and sanding the surface of the drawers giving the stencil and edges of the drawers a more warn look too it and adding your dark wax to melt the drawer faces into the aged look of the unit?
ReplyDeleteYou are going to find all kinds of storage use with this piece. In fact I can see it even in a dinning room storing table linens and extra flatware setting, a entry way to a powder room for towels and soaps and such, a bedroom, or a nook spot in a kitchen to store and display on. This was a great outcome to a piece with a little reimaging became a piece of beauty cottage style to love!
Thank you for taking the time to visit me and my place, it joyed my day seeing your comment.
Enjoy your new piece that will inspire much!

Thank you very much Dore--I love reading your blog and seeing what your creativity is up too. I am glad I took the time to look at this piece and see its potential and it was really nice to have my hubby help me with it. We chatted as he drilled and I painted and it was very relaxing and fun. I agree it has a lot of storage and will be great in someones home. For me I just like to find pieces, paint and transform and then I want them gone so I can do another piece. I just posted this on CL and would love for it to go to a good home. Have a great weekend!
DeleteGreat job on finding the right legs for this piece - wonderful transformation from orange box to blue beauty. Love the surprise on the inside.
ReplyDeleteThank you Donna--I knew buying random sets of legs would come in handy some time. My hubby thinks I am a little strange when I come home with legs for some future project. I suppose he is getting use to it by now though.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! One of the prettiest redo's I have ever seen.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much-such a compliment. I like how it turned out too!
DeleteWow! I would have passed it by, not seeing the potential. You really turned it into a beauty!
ReplyDeleteKudos!
~ Lin
Thanks you Lin--I am glad I saw it the second time and brought it home.
DeleteGood eye, nice legs and pretty paint!
ReplyDeleteThank you Laurie-I am glad I actually looked at it!
DeleteAbsolutely gorgeous! I'm glad you decided not to pass over this piece. You did a beautiful job, giving new life to the chest of drawers!
ReplyDeleteThank you--I am glad I took a second look too!
DeleteI turned out great! I haven't tried MMS milk paint yet (I've always used ASCP) but I love this color! Very pretty.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lora--I love MMS milk paint-it takes a little getting use to, but is so fun.
DeleteIt looked so dorky without legs... I wonder why they were ever cut off? Anyways, looks absolutely fantastic now!
ReplyDeleteThank you Cynthia-I was thinking maybe someone cut the legs off so it could be low for storage for kids or something. I like it better no too!
DeleteSo cute!! Thank you so much for sharing at Redouxinteriors. I love the finish and the color is perfect. Thank you so much for sharing at Reoduxinteriors! Featuring this project at my party tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen--Love your parties!
DeleteWhat a gorgeous transformation. I am stunned! Inside, outside, you've outdone yourself. I'm so happy I found you over at Catch as Catch Can!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Patti
Thank you Patricia--I like how it turn rout too!
DeleteI love this! I just stubbled on your blog from My Repurposed Life! We're from Theredfrontdoor.blogspot.com I would love to know the method you use for chipping your paint!
ReplyDeleteThank you Danelle--I use a spackel knife to scrape the paint and chips off and then I use fine grit sandpaper. I seal with hemp oil/wax.
DeleteSuch a pretty piece! And those legs look pretty darn perfect!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sharon-I think the legs turned out too!
DeleteIt is gorgeous. Love your work. I love seeing transformations. I just posted my own little furniture upcycling piece. I'd love to know your thoughts
