At the Flea Market this past weekend I walked past this piece the first time because this is what it looked like-

It had no legs and just looked like a streaky orange box. I looked at this venders booth a second time (because I bought a dresser the first time and was picking it up) and noticed the detail at the bottom of the drawer. I then opened it up and looked at it and realized someone had cut the legs off and this had potential to be a fabulous piece. I loaded it up in my Volvo and went home.
I looked through my stash of legs in my workshop and found a few different kinds, but only one would work with the existing piece as it was and I was not up for a total change. My husband decided to help me ( he is good about moving furniture and going on the hunt with me, but he usually has no interest in the painting/fixing stage). He drilled holes in the chest and screwed in the legs. Not the perfect legs, but good enough.
I mixed up some Eulie's Sky Milk paint by Miss Mustard Seed and added a little French Enamel to just be different. After painting 3 coats ( it took that many to cover the ugly rusty-orange color) I hand painted the details in white. After scraping off the chips I sealed it with dark wax and hemp oil. I decided to make the drawers inside different so I painted them white and the bottoms aqua. I then stenciled on a design to each drawer.

What a find! I love the color and especially how you did the drawers! I think the legs look perfect. I prefer the inside more than the outside, and if it were mine, and I had the room, I'd leave the doors open. xoxo I bet you sell this one fast. I have noticed on some old pieces that the two front legs match, but the back don't; so, if a piece is missing a couple of legs, one might be able to mend it.

DeleteOh my!! What a bold brave girl you are with design and colour it looks amazing and as for those French empire type legs they in my book are just right. You also added the wood scalloped trim across the bottom as well adding such a sweet touch. What about chipping and sanding the surface of the drawers giving the stencil and edges of the drawers a more warn look too it and adding your dark wax to melt the drawer faces into the aged look of the unit?
ReplyDeleteYou are going to find all kinds of storage use with this piece. In fact I can see it even in a dinning room storing table linens and extra flatware setting, a entry way to a powder room for towels and soaps and such, a bedroom, or a nook spot in a kitchen to store and display on. This was a great outcome to a piece with a little reimaging became a piece of beauty cottage style to love!

I am glad I took the time to look at this piece and see its potential and it was really nice to have my hubby help me with it. We chatted as he drilled and I painted and it was very relaxing and fun. I agree it has a lot of storage and will be great in someones home. For me I just like to find pieces, paint and transform and then I want them gone so I can do another piece. ReplyDeleteThank you Danelle--I use a spackel knife to scrape the paint and chips off and then I use fine grit sandpaper. I seal with hemp oil/wax.
