I am back from my mini blogging break! It was nice to just be home and spend time with my family and be off of social media.
I found this great dresser/buffet on CL and it had beautiful bones and potential, but was in need of some TLC.
Before:It was missing some veneer on the top and a few pieces near the bottom. I have never painted a piece of furniture black, but for some reason this piece told me it needed to be black. I had ordered Typewriter by Miss Mustard Seed awhile back and decided to use this color milk paint on this piece. I thought the black and chippy might disguise some of the veneer issues since I wasn't about to remove it all.
I painted the buffet/dresser with 2 coats of the milk paint and let the chippy magic happen.
I sealed it with tung oil and it made the matte black rich, dark and moody like I wanted.
The top is the milk paint without oil and the bottom has the oil added-big difference!
Love the gorgeous legs |

I am so glad I went with black on this piece!

ReplyDeleteThank you-I am glad I picked black too!
DeleteI am not a big fan of black furniture, but have to say, this piece turned out beautifully. It is such a dark, rich piece.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Darrielle!
Thank you Marigene-black is not my go to either, but it felt right for this piece!
DeleteDid you have to presand the piece before you painted... Or just go straight into painting?
ReplyDeleteThank you Betty-no sanding just painting!
DeleteHmmm... how do you think that would work on dining room chairs?
DeleteIt would great, but milk paint is pretty unpredictable so it might chip a lot or not at all. I think chairs are hard to start with anyways, so it might be better to try one and see how you like it first.
DeleteAh, yes, black and moody. Love it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim-back and moody it is!
DeleteMoody and dramatic, be still my heart - I love your recreated piece!!!!

DeleteI get a bit hesitant using black paint to distress over a rich wood color. I adore this dresser and have completely changed my mind on black chippy goodness. :) love it. Pinning

ReplyDeletePS Pinned and Facebooked--
DeleteFeaturing tomorrow at Vintage Charm :)
DeleteIt is really beautiful Darrielle. It looks like copper hiding underneath the velvety black. A really nice contrast of colors. Beautiful! A statement piece.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a gorgeous transformation. Just the right amount of distressing and the black is beautiful. Rustic and elegant at the same time. Happy New Year..Judy
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful! The colors are so interesting. You added tons of character to this charming piece. Love it. Happy 2016! ~julie
ReplyDeleteI love this piece Darrielle! It reminds me of my desk. It is the only piece of furniture I have ever painted black and it's got me thinking I might try more black. :) Julie
ReplyDeleteI have come across a piece just like this one, I did not purchase it as a dealer friend bought it and painted it white.
ReplyDeleteI love it so much better in the typewriter ink black, and you did a fabulous job my dear... As for the veneer issues, I never look at that as an issue, in fact I rather like these imperfections of an overly loved piece, or neglected. It's these imperfections that totally speak to me, giving the piece age and history...I just wish I could find more pieces with this kind of charm in it.
See you soon.
Love seeing when you keep certain pieces and you show them off in your home decor :)
