SIGNS, SIGNS, SIGNS

While on the hunt for junk this week I found a couple of signs that I liked the shape of and I thought could make them look good with my own twist.

Before:

Since the shapes of both signs were interesting; I got to work.  For the oval sign I wanted to try joint compound and a stencil to see how it would work.  I have tried using joint compound  before and I love how easy it is to use, but this time I was using words with the stencil  and wasn't sure how that would go.  I put my stencil down on the sign and added the joint compound. When I pulled it up  it did not come out with the sharp details that I wanted and was kind of lumpy, but I kept going.

The next step was to put some of the joint compound in my cake decorating pastry bag with one of my decorating tips.  I made the dots around the edges and the little flower with the bag and tip.  After the joint compound dried, I painted the whole thing green and the edges in black.  Next I used Rub n Buff in gold to highlight the dots.  I hand painted the words with white chalk paint and then sealed the whole thing with dark wax and hemp oil.  It is not really what I had pictured in my head, but I still like it and will try something different next time.

For the next sign I printed out a graphic from the graphics fairy.com.  I painted the piece with white chalk paint, Modge-Podged the graphic on, and sealed it with dark wax.  I think it looks much better now!

  4. Love the idea of recycling the little past-their-prime signs into lovely new ones. While the lettering didn't come out like you wanted it to, it still looks really good to me.

    1. Thank you Adina-I want to try using joint compound more and try using my cake decoding tips more too. I am going to try adding a flower to a pair of chairs and see how it goes. If I hate I can just wipe it off!
