Buffalo Check Chair

It is time for another furniture transformation for The Fab Furniture Flipping' Contest.

This month's sponsor is:  Fairfield World

Fairfield World is a third generation, family-owned, American business that specializes in upholstery and sewing items. They also share DIY tips and tutorials on their site for all you hard core project creators.

The theme for this month was MIX and MATCH.

I had found a vintage french chair at the flea market and I am  a lover of fabric, so I decided to reupholster my chair for the contest.
Before:

I am not a very good upholsterer, but I decided to bite the bullet and give this chair a new look.
I pulled out my tools:

This chair had individual tacks and then 50 million staples and I wanted to scream after about an hour of removing them!
So Many!
After hours of pulling out the tacks and staples,  I lined the the back and seat with the poly-fill batting that I had ordered from Fairfield.

The next step was to cut out the fabric.  I decided to mix and match different fabrics for this chair.  I used a vintage buffalo check tablecloth and some vintage toile.

I used the original fabric as a pattern.

After stapling the fabric on the back I stapled cardboard, foam and the Fairfield batting.

Disaster struck!  My pneumatic staple gun broke and I had to finish the project with a hand held stapler!  So difficult!

After wanting to cry and to kick my chair, I pulled my self together and got the rest of the fabric stapled on and the braided jute trim glued over the staples.

Pretend you don't see my jaggy edges!

The toile back

I am proud of myself for finishing this with a hand stapler and for getting the lines almost straight!

  3. Fantastic makeover:-) I know how hard it is to get the lines straight, I had a similar chair and I wanted to change the fabric and used checked material but I gave up and I used some plain fabric because I couldn't get the lines straight:-( Well done:-)

  4. You should be proud, upholstery is difficult and all those staples and tacks ... You've got patience for sure. I love the toile with the check fabric, beautiful choice.

  11. how wonderful! I fell in love at first sight and was shocked you used a tablecloth. How smart! It looks great. First time I've ever seen a wooden chair that I didn't think I'd ever want to paint the wood.

  12. YOu did a great job w/ getting the fabric on smoothly. I'm not a fan of the check w/ that style furniture, but no one can fault your skill in getting the job done. I hope you;ll exchange the jute for something else before too many people use the chair and the jute gets all hairy........ I look forward to your next upholstery project....

  13. I applaud you conquering the challenging job of reupholstering this beautiful French chair. The next job will be easier! However, if I am honest, I really liked the look of the fabric that was already on the chair. I know that buffalo checks and different fabric for the backs of these chairs is very popular right now, and in some cases an improvement over the original upholstery fabric, but this particular chair with the color of its frame just looked sweet to me with it's original fabric. I guess I am getting tired of the use of buffalo plaid repeated so frequently on this type of chair as well as other items. To me, it's becoming too "trendy."

    1. Thank you Naomi-it was an accomplishment for me for sure! The existing fabric was really dirty and stained-it's hard to tell from the photo. I wanted to use a vintage table cloth on a chair and so I just went for it!

  15. The chair looks Awesome!! I love the check and the toile together...I would have had a hard time deciding which print was for the front and which one was for the back. Congrats on forging ahead even when it got tough :)

  17. I am giving you a standing ovation (you just can't see it). Having done a couple of similar projects, I know exactly how much patience is required to remove all of those staples (more than I have). I also would never have been brave enough to go for the check, a solid fabric is enough of a challenge for me! And you did a great job getting it on there straight! Also, thanks so much for sharing the source for that trim. I am guessing it's similar to the trim that MMS has been using of late, and I think it might work perfectly on a settee that I have been refusing to finish for almost a year now. I really have no more excuses now and should just get that thing done!

    1. Thank you Linda-I SO hate removing the staples and tacks! This chair had individual tacks and then staples! I have never used a checked fabric and was nervous I would make it all wonky, but it wasn't as hard as I thought. I can't wait to see yours!
